Draw ownership maps before you chase another dashboard

Internal business apps accumulate shared pieces: message brokers, reporting extractors, identity bridges, overnight batch runners. Health scores without named owners turn into slide decks that nobody can act on.

Before collecting new metrics, list every shared component that touches more than one business app. Write one name beside each — not a team label, a person who can approve a change. Gaps on that list are themselves findings.

We once reviewed a logistics stack where three apps waited on a single file-drop folder. The folder had no owner in the CMDB. Incidents bounced between teams for months. Naming an owner took one afternoon; the remediation backlog finally moved.

Ownership maps also clarify interview plans for assessments. You stop asking the wrong people why a shared library failed and start asking the person who can actually retire it.
